Reverse Parking

I have been pondering this for some time now.

"Why do people back into parking stalls?"

I have only 2 solid theories myself.

1) The Convenience Factor- This is the belief that once you are done with what you are doing, you will be able to leave easier and quicker than backing out of your said stall. This theory seems to be the most solid. I have observed for the most part people parking backwards at their jobs. I could, I guess, see how this would eliminate any nasty inconvenience of backing out of a parking stall when all you want to do is "get the hell out of there." But, but, wouldn't the backing in take as much time as backing out? How bad do you need to save the precious 10 seconds needed to back out when you get off of work? To me this theory seems a waste of time, but plausible.

2) The Coolness Factor- This is the belief that it is "cool" or that your car is "cool" enough to back it into a parking stall. The reason I listed this as second is because it has more cons than pros. I have observed much more people, or rather people's cars in backward situations that are not "cool" than are "cool." Now before we get into an argument about what is "cool" and what isn't, lets just say you know and I know what is a "cool" car and what isn't. For instance a Pontiac Firebird is a "cool" car and a Toyota Corrolla is not. But I see some pros to this. "COOL" cars are bought to be displayed. No one buys a "cool" car just to get from point A to point B. These are not utilitarian automobiles. One does not pay insurance through the roof as well as tags and taxes on a "cool" car because they like the gas mileage or the added convenience of a sunroof. What it boils down to is people buy "cool" cars, regardless of the added expense, to show it off. Get chicks, feel good, have fun, or just generally enjoy them. No one bought a Ford Festiva because they were impressed with it's sexiness.

But I digress.

I am nonetheless baffled by this common occurrence. I am leaning towards Theory 1, but I have my doubts. If anyone has an answer to this question I would appreciate it. To me its a waste of time. I have owned a "cool" car. Well, sort of. But I never thought to take the time to park backwards in order to show it off. Nor have I thought it necessary to leave in such a hurry that I would need to back into a parking stall, with or without a "cool" car. Except maybe in high school. But the issues with why people feel the need to be "cool" in high school are too vast for me to get into here.
